Engineering Precision. Craftsman's Touch.

Noble Oak Customs is the work of Doniel Dortch — a longtime pillar of his community, craftsman, problem solver, and manufacturing engineer currently working at Boeing.

Doniel brings together years of hands-on woodworking experience with the precision and problem-solving mindset of an aerospace engineer. Where traditional woodworking meets modern fabrication, Doniel applies meticulous tolerances and thoughtful joinery to create pieces that endure.

Whether the project starts as a sketch on a napkin, a photograph from a magazine, an architectural challenge, or simply a conversation, Doniel genuinely enjoys figuring out how to turn that idea into something tangible, functional, and visually striking. He often specializes in custom-building around what someone already has—crafting bespoke timber housings, frames, or custom furniture fitted precisely around an antique insert, client-provided sign graphic, or unique spatial footprint.

Have an Idea? Start With a Conversation.

You don't need blueprints.

You don't need to know what type of wood to use.

We typically build custom structures around what you already have.

Have an antique stained glass window, a church or commercial sign graphic, a specific room alcove, or an item that needs custom housing? Send Doniel a photo, sketch, or measurements. Doniel will help determine what is physically possible, discuss equipment parameters, and engineer the best way to build it.

01

Tell Us Your Idea

Describe what you want built, snap a photo of your space, or share an inspiration picture or rough sketch.

02

We'll Talk Through It

Discuss exact dimensions, what physical elements you have (sign graphics, stained glass, hardware), 3D printer bed volume limits, budget, and engineering feasibility.

03

Let's Build Something

Once the details and plans are dialed in, your custom project comes to life with precision and craftsmanship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Direct answers about how we design, engineer, and craft custom projects with Doniel Dortch.

Can Noble Oak Customs build from just a photo, napkin sketch, or rough idea?

Yes, absolutely. You do not need formal blueprints, CAD files, or technical woodworking knowledge. Many of Doniel's best projects start with a photograph found online, a quick phone snapshot of an empty wall, or a hand-drawn sketch on paper. Doniel often specializes in custom-building around what someone already has—such as an existing sign graphic, a stained glass panel, or a unique room alcove. Doniel brings his aerospace manufacturing engineering mindset from Boeing together with fine woodworking experience to determine dimensions, wood species, joint strength, and the most elegant way to bring your concept to reality.

What geographic areas do you serve?

Noble Oak Customs is rooted in the Metro East / Southern Illinois region. We proudly serve homeowners, businesses, and designers throughout Belleville, O'Fallon, Edwardsville, Fairview Heights, Swansea, Shiloh, Scott Air Force Base, and across the greater St. Louis Metropolitan Area. For specialty furniture, 3D printed components, and one-of-a-kind builds, nationwide freight crating and shipping are available throughout the United States.

What makes Doniel Dortch different from standard woodworking shops?

Unlike generic carpentry or high-volume production furniture, Noble Oak Customs combines aerospace engineering rigor with authentic handcraftsmanship. Doniel is an active manufacturing engineer at Boeing and brings millimeter precision, structural load calculations, computer-aided design (CAD), and multi-material engineering (combining fine hardwoods with metal, acrylic, and 3D printed parts) to custom builds. Every build is 100% custom and built to last generations.

What types of wood species and finishes do you work with?

We work with premium kiln-dried domestic and exotic hardwoods including Select White Oak, Red Oak, American Black Walnut, Hard Maple, Cherry, and Ash, as well as authentic reclaimed barn timber for architectural accent walls. All pieces are sealed with commercial-grade, low-VOC protective hardwax oils, polyurethane, or hand-rubbed satin finishes tailored to your intended indoor use.

How does custom project pricing and consultation work?

Every project begins with a direct consultation with Doniel. Once you describe what you need, Doniel evaluates the structural requirements, wood grain selection, and fabrication time, then provides a transparent estimate with a clear milestone timeline. You talk directly with the craftsman who builds your piece—no middleman or sales markup.

Do you offer 3D printing and precision rapid prototyping? Are there size limitations?

Yes, for components within machine build volume limits. With advanced CAD modeling and a professional engineering background, Doniel can 3D print replacement parts, prototype physical components, model scale architectural mockups, and fabricate specialized brackets or custom fixtures that integrate seamlessly into woodwork or stand alone.

Size Limitation Disclaimer: 3D printing is strictly constrained by the physical bed dimensions of the 3D printer. It is ideal for small-to-medium parts, functional prototypes, brackets, and replacement components rather than oversized monolithic pieces. For larger concepts, parts can be engineered as interlocking modular sections or integrated directly into custom wood and metal framing.

Can you build a custom sign or marquee enclosure? Do you provide the sign graphics?

We build the custom wooden enclosure, but clients provide the physical graphic or sign face. Noble Oak Customs specializes in architectural woodworking and structural fabrication rather than graphic printing or vinyl sign production. If you have an existing commercial sign face, church marquee graphic, acrylic panel, metal logo, or illuminated insert, Doniel custom-engineers the heavy-duty timber monument, deep crown moulding, weather seals, and structural mounting to encase and protect your sign.
